Sunday Throwback

Given the current 100:1 ratio of baby to food photos lately, I had to dig deep to reminisce about a prior meal. Hog & Rocks, a gastropub in the Mission District in San Francisco, boasts a foie gras topped burger which we had to try. This visionary restaurant was serving the once banned foie gras as an addition to their already delicious double patty burger. Medium rare, of course. I could tell you all about…

Bath time is the best time

My crib or yours?

Baby had a ball with a bath with mom & dad both on deck. First time trying full submersion into the water (well, almost full… Head above water, of course). Baby steps towards becoming an Olympic swimmer. Enjoying some Otto gear from Auntie Ashley! Slowly incorporating crib life. He seems interested in his mobile for about five seconds. Stuffed sea animals moving in predictable patterns lose their appeal quickly. Baby digs the ocean noises though.…

The big deal

Notorious RBG

Photo credit: New Republic Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg said, “when there is nine” in response to the question whether she thought there were enough women on the Supreme Court. She’s not Bader… She’s Baddest. Lady is 81 years old and still fresh. These are the kind of female influences I want my son to grow up around. “Women will only have true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up…

Mothers are everywhere

Now that I’m one, I’m developing a sense of all the crazy things moms do to give their kids everything they can. I remember in middle school, begging my mom for Nikes. This feels stupid and selfish now because I don’t think a kid needs a $100 pair of sneakers. My kid will probably beg for similar items & I’ll have to give him a piece of my mind. I’ll probably cave in the end…

My little darling

Baby x Skrillex

You are a cinema. I could watch you forever. Baby like to dance. A song he likes, he moves his body, arms and bobs his head to the beat. Maybe like dad, he’ll be a little baby b-boy. In utero, baby liked reggae the best. Now he’s open to all kinds of music: classical with grandma & more modern beats with his folks. Grandma already has her sights set on baby being her dance partner.…

Beverage Nostalgia

Orbitz — you are out of this world & now you really are

Photo credit: Foodology If you grew up in the 90’s, you may very well remember a beverage that defied gravity. Orbitz isn’t just a site you can book flights on, it was every kid’s dream. Truly a drink from the future because years later, a similar concept in boba would steal the pocket money of all pubescent teenagers. Orbitz had little colored “orbit” balls floating in its sweet fluid. I was one of those kids…

Breastfeeding ain’t a piece of cake

Photo credit: Food Network One of my favorite nursing positions is the lying down one. The lactation specialist at the hospital taught me this one before we went home. I’m so glad she did because this would become 60% of all of our various feed-baby moves. A good thing I learned is to keep your arm out straight when mother and baby are both lying on their sides, facing each other. Naturally, baby is properly…

“You’re trying to dissolve the crouton in your mouth.”

Fresh off the Boat. A good show. High quality stereotyping so extreme it’s comical. Strangely honest. Laggies. Decent movie. Parallels the floating time inevitably experienced before the laggie finds her way. Pork belly quesadilla. I love pork belly. The cheese and pork meld perfectly to form a little crust on the tortilla. Honorable mentions: ramen with rock cod too quickly devoured to be pictured. Kona coffee mochi to ward off the Bubbies withdrawal. Thoughts about…

Hunger now

I am hungry. But baby is too. He eats first. So I wait. Wait until he is finished, burped, & has a decently clean diaper before my own hunt can begin. The whole child rearing this is pretty primal. We eat, sleep, poop. It’s more or less variations of this same theme. It’s kind of cool how babies are all about having their needs met, no more, no less. Done eating? Immediate stop. My baby…

Oaklandish treating

What a gem — baby with special friends visiting. Josh & Eric are naturals with little baby. The little one loved being cuddled and played with. So many delicious treats… Cookies, brownie & a delightful donut muffin! We are so fortunate to have so many treats to savor! Baby is now more alert & curious about his environment. Starting to spend more time in his crib in preparation for an eventual conversion. A blessed Saturday.
