Sweets

The crown jewel

Let me tell you about a boy named Zack. He is a culinary genius, this boy. Zack made all the delightful cupcakes for my baby shower. I still have one saved in my freezer because it’s beautiful. He made such perfect frosting, not too sweet & just right. He just graduated culinary school and so sweetly shared a pecan square that is sticky and so delicious. The crust is buttery, rich & flakey. I shared…

Slow garden

Now you know how much Chinese food I eat. Or for us, it’s just food, I guess. Family dinners are very typically Chinese meals because that’s what preferred. Tonight’s selection comes from Jade Garden. More accurately, it’s slow garden because the lightly staffed place was hosting Chinese New Year dinners. Our small table did not have the banquet affair. Rather, we had fried oysters, spinach with preserved egg, veggies with mushrooms, & bittermelon with beef.…

Valentine Delight

Love Mak and then mattress shopping

I mean Joo Mak, a Korean & Japanese fusion spot in Central Richmond district in San Francisco for this warm Valentine’s dinner. We ordered to our heart’s content: takoyaki, toro & bluefin tuna, seafood pancake, the Joo Mak roll (topped with quail egg), kalbi & chicken liver skewers. Our food intermission was a stop at a Sleeptrain to scope out mattresses. So romantic! Now the hunt begins for dessert. Must hurry because the baby clock…

My little darling

My little heart cannot yet have cookies

Cookies from Guang Guang are a mere prop for an almost 11-week-old baby. It’s okay, he’s never had a cookie and thus, does not know what heaven he is missing out on. This little angel excites me with every grin, frown, and even spit-up. Okay, not the last one. He’s enjoying older cousin’s First Valentine onesie. Good thing his arms and legs can stick out because between his rolls and length of body parts, he’s…

Valentine Delight

Love is in the air

A surprise breakfast with vanilla ice cream infused French toast (!), spicy sausage, & tuna salad. I was busy snuggling little baby on his first Valentine’s Day & I heard the unmistakeable sound of the printer in the other room. My husband lovingly prepared breakfast with a little Valentine note, freshly printed. I love all breakfasts but I love this breakfast most of all. Can’t wait until little baby can have his own stack of…

Eat your heart out

That’s what baby said. Little cutie in a onesie mom bought that’s too big. You know why? Because I wanted him to wear it for longer. A slight oversize (6 months) for his 2 & a half frame so mom could milk the onesie for all its worth (not much). In my defense, the kid can comfortably wear 3-6 month outfits so a 6 monther really ain’t that bad. In honor of Friday the 13th,…

We chill so hard

Lunch with the aunties today. Enjoyed some simple Chinese eats at Lychee Cafe in the Sunset of friendly San Francisco. Five dishes & soup for four adults, we had fish, veggies, seafood cake & other sauce covered dishes. My aunt’s favorite is the chicken wings, wet style (aka saucy!). It’s akin to angel wings In thai cuisine. A similarly fried and saucy cousin of the chicken wing, is the family favored spare ribs. Today’s pick…

Gratitude

The lucky & well fed

Tonight we had a special friend come to visit bearing delicious homemade food. Above all the delightful food one can discover in restaurants and beyond, lies those precious edibles people make with love. The bok choy with beans was wonderfully seasoned with an unsuspecting kick of spice as the endnote. I meant to have a taste and nearly finished the whole thing. A common occurrence when I taste good food. The chocolate chip cookies were…

Habit baby

So pleased are people in the Peninsula that Habit Burger made it down to us. Previously a further destination & now localized, the burger joint still has long lines but it’s worth the wait. After trial & error, my favorite here is the Santa Barbara burger. It’s on sourdough (yum) with two delectable patties, avo, & all the usual burger fixings. Paired with the tempura green beans (to make it “healthy” — haha), it was…

Queen of Dim Sum

I didn’t realize how much I loved dim sum until I moved to Upstate NY. The dim sum variety was limited to a faraway location that only served the brunch favorite Sundays for a limited part of the day. It broke my heart. Promptly arriving in dim sum territory (anywhere that’s not Central NY), I like to dim sum often. A new family go to, Shai Lai Seafood restaurant in the outer Richmond has good…
